MARTIN LUTHER KING JR DAY AT CENTRAL COLLEGE 2022
HOW THIS DAY WAS MADE POSSIBLE:
At the beginning of the 2021-2022 school year, students with The United Minority Alliance and Black Excellence began working with Faculty Diversity Fellow, Paulina Mena, to hold an alternative day of learning on Martin Luther King Jr. Day of 2022 and years following at Central College.
A petition was started on September 3rd to compile signatures from students, faculty, and staff in support of this initiative and the petition ultimately gathered 413 signatures.
On Monday, October 4th, four students from the United Minority Alliance and Black Excellence - Muhumure Nzabakiza, Deja Holloway, Se'mone Clark, and Jahi Craig - bravely presented the petition and a formal proposal to the Faculty Steering Committee to begin the process of getting this day approved.
On October 10th, the Faculty Steering Committee voted to send the proposal forward and drafted a motion to be voted on by governance faculty members.
On October 14th, the motion passed the faculty vote by an astounding 94% and it was sent to the Senior Leadership Team who would ultimately approve the proposal.
Since then, Doctor Paulina Mena, Cheri Doane and the Community Based Learning office, Quinn Deahl, and Deja Holloway have been working diligently to plan for Martin Luther King Jr. Day of 2022. A number of other faculty, staff, and administrators have been instrumental in making this day happen and we are excited to present the official schedule for this day!
